The stigma around abortion is real and it hurts. It keeps women who have experienced abortions silenced and isolated from one another. It allows the danger of a single abortion story to dominate our understanding of what abortion is, rather than grow our understanding through multiple, complex stories. According to Chimamanda Adichie, “the consequence of a single story is it robs people of dignity.” And, according to Melissa Harris-Lacewell, the antidote to stigma is comfort.
